As I flipped through the new issue of Rolling Stone Magazine today, I noticed a piece on the best new bands of 2010. I am always looking for a new band to get into, i don't care what type of music, so i was especially excited to see that RS had broken up the bands into 7 different genres of music. The genres included reggae rockers, stoner mc's, and best new jam band. I checked out all 7 of the genres and was not totally impressed with the bands, especially Neon Indian who is pretty much MGMT with a different name, but the last category i looked at was "best folk import." This band was a foursome from West London known as "Mumford & Sons." Complete with a stand-up bass, electric banjo, keyboards, a strong bass-drum and of course great acoustic guitar work, Mumford & Sons played through my headphones like a perfect storm that i didn't want to end. The lead singer's voice, Marcus Mumford, is raw and harsh and beautiful all at the same time. The other members of the band contribute flawlessly to the loud and powerful harmonies that are showcased in almost every song.
If the idea of a folk band turns you off from checking these guys out, i'll say that they are a
I would compare this band to similar bands in an attempt to draw more interest from undecided readers, much like itunes does when you buy their cd, but i think for the first time in awhile, a band whose first album sounds this great, deserves to be heard on its own, without other comparisons. The band formed in late 2007 and played David Letterman on Feb. 17th 2010 and owned the night. According to Rolling Stone, Ewan McGregor, Letterman's guest that night, asked the band for tickets to their next show and had only ever seen them that night. The link to that performance can be found at the end of the page. This band is something different and something to be heard. Their first cd, Sigh No More is 48 mins of excellence and i highly recogmend it to anyone who enjoys real, authentic, genuine music. Check it out.
Until Next Time,
