Gentlemen Hall played at Roger's Pub last night for the second time this semester. The first time they came the turnout was somewhat accidental. Another on campus event was a bust so a large portion of the student body headed over to pub on Friday... which is normally a relatively quiet night for reasons I can't understand. They rocked the place then and did not disappoint last night. Hazy will provide more in depth review of their music to come as we have a new cd of theirs. Two things struck me about their performances. 1. They became a hit on campus outside of the general musical population purely by coincidence. Their exposure on campus earlier in the semester was completely accidentally which shows how being in the right place at the right time is unpredictable and can provide valuable benefits. 2. Hazy mentioned if you close your eyes while they played Electric Feel,... you literally think it is MGMT. So, like Stevie Wonder tickling the ivory I closed my eyes in the middle of the dance floor and son of a gun, it was MGMT. More to come from Hazy.
Hazy here. OK, so Gentlemen Hall won a MTV VMA for best Boston break out band in 2009 and after seeing them live twice, I can totally see why. There is no doubt that college party tunes are changing and there is not bigger band leading this revolution than MGMT, and Gentlemen Hall (GH) is finding itself sliding into this category of party tunes. I do not want to make too many comparisons of GH to MGMT but they do have similar sounds. GH gets people dancing. I have two of their recorded tracks, "Castaway" and "Take Me Under" and they sound great; a very Jamiroquoi feel about them, which is a major compliment. What this band is especially great at however, is live performances. Granted I have only seen them twice at a campus bar, but I can genuinely tell you that they love the music they play and love the crowd getting into their music. They have an excellent stage presence for a new band, and love the crowd partying to their music as much as they do. There are too many up-and-coming musicians these days that are so wrapped up in their own persona's and just whine out their music and act like they don't care if you like it or not. I know that Gentlemen Hall's music is upbeat but it would be easy for them to just play instead of what they do, and that is have a great time when they perform and really get the crowd into their music. I have had the opportunity to see them in a very small venue and now I want to see them at a mid-size venue. With more people, there will be more of a party and I believe that this band can really get things going.
Gentlemen Hall: Very good band: Great music, Awesome Live. If you have the opportunity to see these guys, take it, for sure.
