Video Games: Supreme Court to argue California Law

In keeping with Today's Random Fact theme of video juegos, the Supreme Court announced yesterday that they will hear a case about a new California law. Governor Schwarzenegger signed into law a bill that prohibits the sale or rental of explicit video games to people under 18. Video games already have a rating system similar to that of movies. It is illegal to sell or rent R rated movies to minors. This law, if deemed constitutional would do the same thing for videos games in California. If it does pass I think a large number of states will move to pass a similar law. Video game violence has been blamed a large number of teenage violence cases in the past fifteen years. I think this is a good law. I think it will pass because the movie rating system and sales is already in place. The court has a compelling interest to protect the youth from explicit material in movies, as well as in video games. The law does not make it illegal for minors to possess the games, just to rent or buy them. So undoubtedly kids will have their hands on the games. At least their parents will know more about the game and the law will hopefully increase their awareness of the violence in the games. At the very least maybe the kids will go outside and enjoy the California weather instead of playing games in a cave all day.

That's all I have to say about that.

  1. I deffinitely agree. I laughed at the cave part but it's really true that kids need to get out more and stop wasting life away playing video games.
