1994 – The Best: Forrest Gump – This is an interesting year in film; there are two films that can both easily be considered the best, so there will be The Best and The Best #2. The best film of 1994 is a film that has been adored by audiences since its release; even young people today enjoy Tom Hanks as Forest Gump. Forest Gump is a film that follows the life of simple hearted and simple minded southern boy named Forest. Along the way Forest witnesses and has an effect on historical events (Vietnam and various civil rights demonstrations), meets historical figures, and influences pop-culture through his never ending run. Essentially, this is a film about the journey of life, and audiences love it. I love it. Forest Gump won 6 Academy Awards.
The Best #2: The Lion King – The Lion King is a movie every kid in my generation has seen at one point or another, and I think that every single one of them loved the film. The Lion King is an animated feature film, but transcends all notions that animation cannot contain emotion and meaning. The film was the highest grossing film in the world in 1994, and is still today the 29th highest grosser of all time. Not bad for an animated Disney movie. The film is a modern day Hamlet, as it outlines the life of a lion named Simba and all of his trials and tribulations. The movie has a great plot, great characters, and great music – thank you Phil Collins. The film won 2 Academy Awards.
Other Notables: Reality Bites, The Shawshank Redemption
