News: Gulf Oil Spill

Tragic news happens everyday and it is relatively easy to become immune to it. The first week or so of the oil spill I did not think much of it. Yes, I recognized the destruction of wildlife and the damage to the environment. However, I have never been directly impacted by an oil spill, or any major catastrophe. Watching the news yesterday gave me a new perspective on this horribly damaging event to our ocean, our economy and the financial consequences of the ignorance of multi-millionaire executives at BP. The leak should not be described as a leak. It is literally an open valve shooting oil into the gulf and the oil will reach all land around the gulf in the not too distant future. The goals to repair the open valve are rudimentary and have so far accomplished nothing. BP wants to shoot trash into the pipe to try to clog it. This will surely not last very long as the pressure coming up from the oil well is enormous. This is not a "spill" where a definite amount of oil is spilled into the ocean. The amount of oil that could be put in the water is not finite. Each day that this continues the more oil is spilled and the greater the consequences will be for the nation and the ocean.
The scariest part of the entire situation is the ignorance of the BP executives. Today the CEO of BP, Tony Hayward, said not to worry about the oil spill because its "relatively tiny" compared to the entire ocean. If I were on the board at BP I would be humiliated by these idiotic comments. On top of that, BP is refusing to pick up the tab for the cleanup that Obama is insisting they pay. I thought BP was a progressive energy company with an eye on sustainability but it appears they are just as bad as the makers of the broken seal, Halliburton. This whole story is like a horrible terror movie with ignorant antagonists that are easily outsmarted.
